Great words to live by my friend. It is far too easy to get caught up in the day to day routines we live and forget the threads that hold us all together. Having been on the requesting side in the past lit the flame of remembrance to be there for others. One of the first people I met with at the time was out of my network but knew people I was connected to. He offered three introductions, and search advice for a price: Never turn down a request to meet for coffee from someone in transition. While coffee isn't always possible I do remember to take the call or respond to the request because you never know.

In my previous capacity as CEO of an employee benefits company we designed a three tier performance plan- a monthly or quarterly Individual metrics or goals based incentive plan, a semi or annual department or division bonus based on business plan objective completion, and a company-wide profit based bonus plan. We announced the initial conclusions in Jan following year end but we only finalized and paid the bonuses after the audited financials were available- no surprises that way!
Excellent education on the pitfalls of improper bonus planning and management Chuck.

Chuck,

Great piece and so true. Not sure how many times I've come into situation where the compensation plan doesn't fit the goals and objectives of the organization. Oh wait, that's every time, because it takes time to sit down and think about why you're compensating or rating performance.

Thanks for a great wake up post and the right time of the year!

I'd be interested in knowing how many people out there pay at the end of the year rather than waiting until they know exactly what their financial situation is really going to be before paying. A topic of another conversation.

Excellent observations, Chuck! I just inaugurated a quarterly (instead of annual) bonus plan here at my firm, and while it of necessity must be based on revenue (if there isn't sufficient revenue, there isn't a bonus pool), I have made it totally discretionary, (ie, in my sole discretion) as to who gets how much. However, I do want to issue a memo telling everyone what factors I will be looking at in exercising my discretion, and your blog has provided me with some ideas about what I should include.
Hope all is going well with you and yours and that 2012 is a terrific year for you!

If management followed "“Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (or words to that effect)," occupy Wall Street would not be gaining the steam is has around the country and the world.

What is needed is for them to back to the bottom to remember what is was like before going to the top. A good fall can always provide a serious jolt to the memory cells.

Well said! Management 101 requires that one follows: "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" (or words to that effect).

The boss needs to communicate, empower and respect the staff. That will gain the respect of the staff and boost morale and, consequently, productivity.
